No Surprises Act

No Surprises Act Notice for Private Pay Clients

Effective January 1, 2022

As a private pay speech-language pathology practice, we value transparency in all aspects of your care — especially when it comes to cost. Under the No Surprises Act, you have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for services if you are not using insurance.

What Is the No Surprises Act?

The No Surprises Act is a federal law that protects patients from unexpected medical bills. While this law is primarily aimed at out-of-network emergency care and insurance-based billing, it also requires healthcare providers — including speech-language pathologists in private pay settings — to provide upfront cost estimates for uninsured or self-pay clients.

Your Right to a Good Faith Estimate

If you do not have insurance or choose not to use it, you are entitled to a Good Faith Estimate (GFE) that outlines the expected cost of services.

The Good Faith Estimate Will Include:

  • An estimate of total expected charges for all speech therapy services scheduled

  • Information about the duration and frequency of therapy, if known

  • Any additional administrative or assessment fees, if applicable

  • You will receive the estimate:

  • In writing (by email or paper copy)

  • At least 1 business day before your first scheduled session (if scheduled 3+ days in advance)

  • Upon request, even if you haven’t scheduled an appointment yet

  • ❗ Note: This estimate is not a bill. Actual costs may vary depending on your individual needs, treatment progress, or changes in your therapy plan. We will always communicate any changes clearly.

We do not bill insurance directly and are considered an out-of-network provider. You may request a superbill to submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement, but we cannot guarantee coverage or payment.

Dispute Resolution Option

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than the Good Faith Estimate, you have the right to initiate a dispute resolution process through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
